SCMP a moving and unforgettable experience !

Writer's picture: River City VoicesRiver City Voices

River City Voices kicked off 2023 with an exceptional project at Parramatta Gaol led by the talented Julian Day, brainchild of Super Critical Mass, an experimental human soundscape project that has seen numerous iterations presented around the world in unique and varying settings.

This time it was Parramatta's turn!

Over the course of 3 Saturdays members of the community came together with Julian to create, experiment, vocalise and play percussion in the varying spaces and buildings of historic Parramatta Gaol. A free performance on April 1 took the audience on a journey through the site, from Visitor centre, to Recreation Yard to Cell Wing 6 - "At times it almost seemed like the place was resonating with the ghosts of the distant past."

And for those who missed it, an audio film of the performance will be shown at a later date in Sydney Olympic Park and Parramatta Square. Stay tuned !

This project was made possible with support from a City of Parramatta Creative Leveraging Project Grant, Powerhouse Parramatta, and thanks also to Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council.
